Rob's Restoration Project

The Restoration of Rob & Sue 's 1975 Corvette

We've had our 1975 L48 Auto for six years (I think!). I've loved Corvettes since my interest in drag racing started around 1970 and always wanted a Shark.

I saw the ad for this car in the back of Classic American and we did all the wrong things. Firstly, and most importantly we didn't join the CCCUK first. We then bought the first car we saw because we liked the colour!

We still love the colour although sadly it hadn't been applied too well, and lacked the required flex agent on the rear "soft" section. Consequently the paint has cracked there quite badly.

Sue was particularly keen to have the car re-painted but having done a few jobs on it I was concerned about rust. The biggest job I undertook with the help of our web host, Stephen Irons, was pulling the rear end apart to do the wheel bearings. Some bolts were nigh-on impossible to shift. After about three hours Sue appeared and asked how we were getting on. "We've removed two bolts," replied Stephen. Angle grinders then became involved.

Other jobs that had been done to the car were a new fibre-glass rear spring, a new U-section just in front of the bonnet opening to which the headlamps are attached, new leather seat covers and foam cushions (done by Rick Bufton) and an interior re-spray. I also tidied up the engine compartment but unfortunately disturbed an old bit of wiring and caused a major fire. That's another story, but it's been to Claremont for the interior to be done (again) and new wiring looms.

So we're attached to the car. I've done quite a lot to it, - enough to worry about rust, and spending a lot of money spraying a car when I'm not sure about its structural integrity. A body-off seemed to be the only option. Many say it's not worth it on a mid-seventies car. Others have spent a small fortune on a car only to find devastating rust on the chassis. We didn't spend a fortune initially so we figure it's worth it, especially as we plan to keep the car, and we're still very, very young(!).
